Summer school - Optical Wireless Communications

The final report from the third Summer School of Telecommunications Educational Seminars aimed at Optical Wireless Communications held in Hotel pod Zamkem, Boskovice from 6th to 9th of January 2015.

The third Summer School of Telecommunications Educational Seminars supported by the project "Development of Excellence of the Telecommunication Research Team in Relation to International Cooperation - CZ.1.07/2.3.00/20.0217" was held for four days at the Hotel pod Zamkem.

During the first day of third Summer School were given lectures from five speakers. First of them was Prof. Dr. Yahya Baykal from Cankaya Universitesi, (Turkey). His opening speech entitled Turbulence Effects in FSO links summarized problems connected with turbulences influence on the optical free-space system. The second, following speaker was Dr. Jiri Libich, who in his lecture Towards High Data Rate Free-Space Optical Networks presented his research started with his doctoral thesis in the field of FSO links. FSO links are more and less affected by thermal turbulences and heat emission from the roofs with regards to used modulation format. The third, no less, interesting lecturer was one of the most remarkable researchers in the field of metrology and evaluation of atmospheric transmission environment influences on the electromagnetic waves Dr. Martin Grabner from Czech Metrology Institute in Prague. His presentation named Atmospheric Propagation on FSO links summarized atmospheric inflences on the optical link located in capital city Praha. The fourth invited speaker was Prof. Marian Marciniak from the National Institute of Telecommunications, (Poland), with very actual presentation entitled Standardization of Free-Space Optics Communications. This presentation was aimed to give attendees an overview of the ITU, IEEE international standards and specifications in the given field. The last lecture of the first Summer School day was presented by Dr. Jan Vitasek from VSB-Technical University of Ostrava, which in his presentation entitled New Visible Light Communication introduced results of his dissertation thesis.

The second day of third Summer School was opened by second presentation of Prof. Dr. Yahya Baykal named Optical Wave Propagation in Underwater Medium. This lecture was very interesting for its perspective and dissimilarities with air transmission media. Next lecturer was Prof. Dr. Stanislav Zvanovec from Czech Technical University in Prague, whose lecture was entitled The trends in FSO and VLC field. This lecture was devoted to the results in FSO and VLC field of his optics team and their international partners. The closing presentation of the second day had Dr. Rafael Perez-Jimenez from Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, (Spain). His presentation has had title Multiuser CSK Modulation for Visible Light Communications and its Applications. This presentation was focused at very attractive topic of Color Shift Keying modulation for VLC communication. This presentation was followed by very lively discussion.

The third day had opening presentation Prof. Arun K. Majumdar (USA), which in his first lecture named Mitigation Techniques for High Data Rate FSO Communications in presence of Atmospheric Turbulence was speaking about FSO concept as a complex. After that had presentation specialist from Institute of Atmospheric Physics ASCR, Assoc. prof. Dr. Ondrej Fiser. In his presentation with title Impact of atmospheric turbulences on FSO attenuation were described atmospheric turbulences and point out unsolved tasks and phenomena affecting quality/power of transmitted optical beam. Second presentation given by Prof. Arun K. Majumdar was entitled FSO RetroCommunications through Atmospheric Turbulence. This presentation was aimed at utilization of new transmission concept of optical signal. At the end of the third day there was presented lecture named Free Space Optics given by Prof. Dr. Zabih Ghassemlooy from University of Northumbria at Newcastle (UK). This lecturer was speaking about development of FSO in recent years and also about results of his team, including exhibits realized in their laboratory. The presentations performed during the last, fourth day of the third Summer School belong to Prof. Ghassemlooy and Ing. Michael Pisarik from the company SQS Vlaknova optika. Presentation given by Prof. Ghassemlooy was named Visible Light Communications and was focused at utilization of Visible Light Communication in the future indoor free-space systems. Presentation performed by MSc. Michael Pisarik was entitled Fiber Lasers for FSO and was dealing with advantages and possibilities of fiber lasers as an optical source suitable for FSO.

Thanks to all performed specialized lectures the attendees had opportunity to take a closer look into the specific field of free-space, as well as visible light communication, atmospheric influences, standards in FSO or fiber lasers.
